“Not for Sale”: Free Audiobook

I’m kind of in love with Christianaudio.com.   It’s an online audiobook store focused on Christian publications.  They have some great stuff available, ranging from classic to cutting-edge.  But the real reason I’m hooked: every month they offer one full audiobook, free to download in its entirety.  Since I signed up for notifications from the site a few months ago, I’ve gotten free MP3 versions of Augustine’s Confessions and John Calvin’s writings on prayer.  Not a bad deal at all.

Imagine my excitement when I learned today that February’s free audiobook is Not for Sale: The Return of the Global Slave Trade and How We can Fight It, by David Batstone.*  I’ve been wanting to read this book, especially since reading Nicholas Kristof’s recent articles on sex slavery.**  Here’s the official product description:

Award-winning journalist David Batstone reveals the story of a new generation of 21st century abolitionists and their heroic campaign to put an end to human bondage. In his accessible and inspiring book, Batstone carefully weaves the narratives of activists and those in bondage in a way that not only raises awareness of the modern-day slave trade, but also serves as a call to action.

With 2007 bringing the 200th anniversary of the climax of the 19th century abolitionist movement, the world pays tribute to great visionary figures such as William Wilberforce of the United Kingdom and American Frederick Douglass for their remarkable strides toward framing slavery as a moral issue that people of good conscience could not tolerate. This anniversary serves not only as a commemorative date for battles won against slavery, but also as a reminder that slavery and bondage still persist in the 21st century. An estimated 27 million people around the globe suffer in situations of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation from which they cannot free themselves. Trafficking in people has become increasingly transnational in scope and highly lucrative. After illegal drug sales and arms trafficking, human trafficking is today the third most profitable criminal activity in the world, generating $31 billion annually. As many as half of all those trafficked worldwide for sex and domestic slavery are children under 18 years of age.

I’m really just beginning to learn about and engage with this issue.  It’s been on my mind lately, so I’m pretty psyched to listen to this book.  I’ve spend some time looking around The Not for Sale Campaign website, and it’s good stuff.

Downloading the free audiobook is very easy.  You have to create an account with Christianaudio.com, but the process is quick and painless.  Here’s the site to visit: http://christianaudio.com/free_download.php.  Coupon code is FEB2009.

*The free audiobook download also comes with a PDF version of “The Abolitionist Church Handbook” from The Not for Sale Campaign.

**  It’s not hard to see the connection between AIDS and human trafficking, especially sex slavery.  Moreover, this is just a huge issue, and one I consider well-worth covering on this site.

  1. Thanks for mentioning this!

We’re really excited about Not For Sale too. I’ve been personally engaged in the campaign in several ways and was ecstatic when Harper agreed to the giveaway.

Thanks for your support and for mentioning this important cause!

    All my best,

  2. Just wanted to tell you a couple of things:

    1. We have an Underground Church Network initiative within Not For Sale that you might want to involve your church in and we have an Abolitionist Church Handbook available for free download on the site. Contact Mark Wexler at maxwex@notforsalecampaign.org for more info on the Network.

    2. The web site is undergoing a MAJOR revision and should be released in the next couple of months.

    3. We just completed a FREE, 8-week in-depth Bible study based on the book, Not For Sale.

Please click on the link above, put in the password, and click “download.” It will take a few minutes, because it is a large file.

This Bible study guide went out to the 14,000 churches in the Willow Creek Association today. It is also loaded on SermonCentral.com and on a Christian Audio website. Next week, it will be available for free on the Not For Sale website. All in all, more than 100,000 people are expected to have access to it. That’s pretty encouraging.

    Thanks,

  3. Thanks for the recommendation! I am downloading now…

  4. This is a great sounding audiobook. I think it’ll really engage discussion as I think most of us especially in the western world seem to think the slave trade is essentially a thing of the past. If what I’m hearing is right that might not be true.
