President Bush on International Development

President Bush spoke at the White House Summit on International Development on Tuesday, urging his listeners not to neglect international aid and development work as budgets tighten in response to economic problems.

During times of economic crisis, some may be tempted to turn inward — focusing on our problems here at home, while ignoring our interests around the world. This would be a serious mistake. America is committed — and America must stay committed — to international development for reasons that remain true regardless of the ebb and flow of the markets.

It’s good to hear the president talk about this issue, because it could well become a major problem.  Hopefully leaders around the world will listen to Bush on this one.  Lame duck though he is, one this issue, he makes a good point.
