NN: AIDS and condoms in Asia

>> India’s NACO To Distribute 1.5M Female Condoms to Sex Workers in Four States, Hindustan Times (9 Sept 2008)
“About 1.5 million female condoms will be social-marketed to sex workers in four states this year as India, with over 2.5 million HIV/AIDS patients, tries to empower women in its fight against the disease. […] Sujatha Rao, director general [of the National AIDS Control Organisation], said a pilot project introducing female condoms to sex workers in 2007 has been a big success, and hence it was being scaled up about three- fold.”

>> Cambodia’s Condom Campaign Faces Legal, Financial Issues, Health Official Says, AFP  (11 Sept 2008)
“Threats to a successful Cambodian condom campaign has raised fears the country could experience a second epidemic of the disease, health officials said Wednesday. Tia Phalla, of Cambodia’s National AIDS Authority, said the country’s so-called 100 percent condom use programme, which provides sex education and distributes condoms to sex workers, ‘is facing difficulties’ because of a new anti-sex trafficking law and lack of financial support.”

>> Philippine Health Department To Promote Condom Use in Fight Against HIV/AIDS Despite Opposition From Catholic Church, Kaiser Network (2 Sept 2008)
“Despite opposition from the Roman Catholic Church, the Philippine Department of Health will support the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in addition to encouraging education on the topic and promoting measures to guard against sexually transmitted infections, the Philippine Star reports. Health Undersecretary Mario Villaverde at the second Asia Pacific Regional Meeting on universal access to HIV prevention in Manila, Philippines, said, ‘The use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS is different from their use for birth control,’ adding, ‘The church’s position is detrimental to public health’ (Crisostomo, Philippine Star, 8/29).”  (NOTE: The Catholic Church’s position on condoms is an interesting and highly controversial topic that I’d like to look at more in the future.)
