Importing HIV to Australia
According to this opinion piece by Jonathan Anderson, president of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine:
Australia is now dealing with a two-speed epidemic. Infection rates in men having sex with men have been rising in Australia since the start of the decade. At the same time, infections in new populations — such as Australian heterosexual men travelling overseas for sex — have highlighted the need for more sophisticated and complex responses.
Here are two related articles from the The Australian, dealing with HIV and overseas sex:
>> Report finds Australian businessmen contracting HIV in PNG
“A cluster of Australian businessmen has contracted HIV after risky sex with bar girls and prostitutes on work trips to Papua New Guinea.”
>> HIV rise linked to holidays in Asia
“Clusters of heterosexual men are becoming infected with HIV while on business or holiday trips to Papua New Guinea and Southeast Asian countries, where epidemics are raging unchecked.”
