NN: Meetings, awards, research

It’s been a while since I did a News Notes post, so here we go!

>> Southeast Asian Health Officials To Meet in New Delhi To Examine HIV/AIDS, Other Health Issues, Kaiser Network (Sept. 8, 2008)
Health ministers and other officials from Bangladesh, Bhutan, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Sri Lanka and Thailand are gathering in Delhi to discuss issues related to HIV/AIDS and other health problems.

>> National Institute On Drug Abuse Announces Recipients Of New Avant-Garde Award For Innovative HIV/AIDS Research, Medical News Today (Sept. 8, 2008)
The three winners are studying: 1) the genetics of HIV and its interaction with proteins in host cells; 2) the development of therapies that keep HIV from spreading to uninfected cells; and 3) the effectiveness of “expanded HAART coverage among injection drug users.”

>> How STDs Increase The Risk Of Becoming Infected With HIV, Medical News Today (September 8, 2008)
“Individuals who have a sexually transmitted disease (e.g., genital herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia) and women with yeast and bacterial vaginal infections have an increased risk of becoming infected with HIV if exposed to the virus through sexual contact.”  New research is suggesting why this might be the case.
