HIV thrives on misinformation and poverty

Here’s a somewhat surprising and enlightening article from canoe.ca.  According to author Kevin Connor, “AIDS continues to flourish in Canada because too many people believe it is no longer a death sentence.”  Many people confuse treatment with cure, some even thinking there is already an HIV vaccine.

According to the article, Monique Doolittle-Ramos, executive director of the AIDS Society explained, “We can’t just educate once and go away. We have a whole new generation that needs the facts (as 50% of new infections are young people under 25).”

The article also discusses the disproportionately high rate of HIV among Canada’s Aboriginal population, and the ways in which poverty accentuates the HIV/AIDS problem.  Activists suggest that poor HIV+ individuals face increased danger “because the government doesn’t include nutrition in their treatment.”  (Proper nutrition is required for antiretroviral medications to function properly.)

The article also looks at how homophobia functions as a health threat, especially as it was discussed at the International AIDS Conference.
