Mexican women increasingly affected by HIV/AIDS

The Kaiser Network reports that health workers have said that Mexican women are increasingly infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, adding up to 20% of new cases in Mexico.

Jorge Saavedra, director of the National Center for the Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS, said women are often infected by “their husbands or stable sex partners, who often are undocumented immigrants to the U.S.”  Others noted that women often lack the power to negotiate sexual activities or safer practices, and may not be able to speak out for themselves because they fear being abused.
