PEPFAR responses

Okay, lots of responses to the Senate’s passage of the PEPFAR legislation, so I’m just going to try to give some links to what’s out there.  Here we go.

  1. This posting from the Kaiser Network has summaries and links to several editorials and a couple letters to the editor responding to the PEPFAR vote.  The editorials are from the Las Vegas Sun, the Oklahoman, the Seattle Times, and the Washington Times.  The letters to the editor come from representatives of the Global Fund and the Global AIDS Alliance; both letters dispute some of the factual claims and interpretations found in the Washington Times editorial.
  2. This AP article quotes Senators Joseph Biden and Richard Lugar in praise of the re-authorization.  I think this article does a good job of highlighting the huge significance of PEPFAR.
  3. Here’s a short BBC article about the plans to lift travel bans on people living with HIV/AIDS, with an interesting quote from Senator Gordon Smith.
  4. As reported by Medical News Today and the Ethiopian Daily Monitor, advocacy organization Africa Action has praised the re-authorization and expansion of PEPFAR (no surprise there).
  5. Meawhile, Sen. Jim DeMint from South Carolina “remains defiant” after his protestations against PEPFAR were soundly defeated by 80 of his colleagues (no suprise there either).

I think those are the main articles I spotted.  Feel free to comment if you have thoughts of your own, or know of interesting commentary from others.
